On his first disc of new material in seven years, hitmaker Bryan Adams doesnt even think about changing his tune.Instead, he continues the laid back nostalgia trip he began with last years Tracks of My Years, a set of 6.Bob Rock and David Foster. This time the all star cast includes ELO legend Jeff Lynne in the producers chair and, more significantly, longtime songwriting partner Jim Vallance, who co wrote most of Adams early hits.Despite the high wattage partnership, Get Up Internet. To their credit, theyve crafted a consistent slate of undeniably hooky fare, including the rockabilly rave up You Belong to Me which owes much to Lynnes Travelling Wilburys, the guitar crunch nuggets Go Down Rocking and Do What You Gotta Do, and Beatlesque fare like the twangy Dont Even Try and the swirly ballad We Did it All.More to their credit None of the cuts sport hip hop beats, EDM synths, crossover duets or superstar cameos. This isnt the sound of a has been desperately trying to become relevant as you can infer from some of those song titles, its the sound of a veteran craftsman doing what he does best and enjoying himself in the process.Though you wish he could have enjoyed it a little more With just nine new songs that add up to only 2.Get Up is less an album than a glorified EP.But even if he clearly isnt interested in breaking as much of a sweat these days, at least Adams still leaves you wanting more.In a good way. RATING 3.Mobile users, please view here.Janet Jackson. Unbreakable.Positively shocking. The latter is old hat for Janet Jackson, of course. But the former is a new twist. And a welcome one.Arriving seven years after her last album Discipline, the 4.Unbreakable may be her most appealing and approachable chiefly because its her least provocative and most mature. And changed for the better. The blatant carnality and sex jams that were mandatory mainstays for much of her career are thankfully nowhere to be found theyve been replaced with thoughtful personal and political ruminations that span a vast emotional range from romantic bliss and euphoria to existential depression and disenchantment.Likewise, her music crafted once again with longtime partners Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis has taken a mellower turn, forsaking kinetic R B for a more laid back but still adventurous blend of low impact EDM and silky boudoir soul, with the occasional bit of Sly Stone funk and power balladry.Admittedly, it is a little light on singalong choruses and Jacksons lightweight vocals cant really do justice to some of the more emotionally heavy material.Still, theres no denying Ms.Jackson is finally for real. And about time. RATING 3.Bruce Springsteen.Schottenstein Center, Columbus, Ohio, 2.Bruce Springsteen has always been his own, um, boss. But never more so than on the latest instalment in his live Archive Series.Recorded during his 2.Devils Dust Tour, the 1.Its also primarily acoustic aside from a dash of electric guitar and piano and fairly sombre, in keeping with the grim tone of the D D album. But if songs like State Trooper, Matamoros Banks about the death of an illegal immigrant and Reno recounting a visit to a hooker are dark stuff, at least the man himself is in a fairly light mood, bantering with the crowd and telling stories between songs. And while Springsteen passes on his usual rousing E Street Band classics, the 2.For You and Promised Land, rarities like Back in Your Arms and Cynthia, a Tom Waits inspired rendition of Reason to Believe and even a closing cover of Suicides Dream Baby Dream. As usual, its available from his own live.Hey, they dont call him The Boss for nothing.RATING 4 out of 5BOX SETSPaul Mc.Cartney. Tug of War Archive Collection EditionPipes of Peace Archive Collection Edition. When you make as much music as Paul Mc.Cartney has and still does a few keepers are bound to slip through the cracks.Tug of War and Pipes of Peace, the former Beatles first releases of the 1.Archive Collection Series, fit that description.Created during a period of change for Macca they were also his first albums following the dissolution of Wings and the assassination of John Lennon these companion pieces havent stood the test of time quite as well as some other outings. But for fans, theyre well worth rediscovering in these lovingly restored and expanded editions.Recorded more or less concurrently with producer George Martin and VIP guests including Ringo Starr, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Carl Perkins, Stanley Clarke and others, both 1.War and the following years Peace find Mc.Cartney moving beyond the guitar rock of Wings for a more expansive and varied menu that covers everything from pop and funk to rockabilly and classical.War is the stronger of the discs, thanks not only to hits like Take it Away and the Wonder ballad Ebony and Ivory, but also to gems like the punchy Ballroom Dancing, the Perkins cameo Get It, the Latin groover Dress Me Up As a Robber and the Lennon elegy Here Today.Peace may be the lesser offering by comparison, but its the more varied of the pair, with the Indian spiced title cut, the 1.CC ish So Bad, the Steely Dan like This is the Man, the bluesy Sweetest Little Show, the 5.Average Person and the electro pop of Tug of Peace not to mention the megahit Jackson duet Say Say Say.But like the rest of the titles in this series, the original album is only the starting point. Both albums have reportedly been remastered from the original tapes War has also been beefed up with a new mix. Both come with an extra disc of well crafted demos, B sides War includes Rainclouds, the song Mc.Cartney was recording the day after Lennons death and remixes Peace has a version of Say Say Say with previously unused vocals, plus a DVD with about half an hour of old video clips and behind the scenes footage. And of course, both sets include a 1.Not bad for 7. 0 each.Dont let them slip through your fingers.RATING 4 and 3. 5 out of 5Queen.Studio Collection. You want it all You want it now And you want it on vinyl Here you go.Five years in the making, Queens new 1.LP Studio Collection box set may be the ultimate document of the British rockers catalogue. It has all 1. 5 of their studio albums, from their self titled 1.Made in Heaven. All have been reportedly restored and remastered either from the original master tapes or other high quality digital sources, expertly cut on half speed lacquers at Abbey Road Studios, and pressed on heavyweight 1.The colours complement the artwork the Flash Gordon disc is yellow like the album cover, Night at the Opera is white, The Game is silver, Queen II has one white disc and one black with etchings on the blank sides, etc.Unlike the shoddy coloured vinyl discs of old, the sound quality on these has supposedly not been compromised by the artsiness.Speaking of art, every album cover has been fastidiously and precisely recreated in its entirety, down to the original inner sleeves, lyric sheets and posters and each LP comes in its own resealable plastic baggie.Theres a 1. 08 page full sized hardback book with an album by album breakdown, liner notes, lyrics, memorabilia and pictures. And the whole thing comes in a hefty gold flip top box with a cardboard wraparound. The downsides It doesnt come cheap the set goes for about 6.It doesnt include B sides or other non LP fare. And while Queens site claims the box includes download codes for the music, I found none in my set and even if I had, the downloads are only mp.Still, if youre a well heeled Queen fan, a vinyl fan, a box set fan or just a collector, it should absolutely drive you wild.RATING 4. 5 out of 5NOW HEAR THISThe Sheepdogs.Future Nostalgia.Shaggier and shaggier. But still capable of new tricks. Now expanded to a quintet, Saskatchewans favourite sons slip the prairie rock leash and head for the hippie hills on their trippy fifth album.Tons more keyboards and horns, forays into alien abduction folk and zombie apocalypse blues, even a six song mini medley song cycle theyre all part of the Guess Whovian program along with enough sizzling guitar lines, harmonized solos and soulfully muscular vocals to make you sit and stay.Good dogs.
